Start with expenses rather than a fixed percentage
How much to allocate to cards and cash depends on payment options at the destination. List transport, accommodation, food, markets, and tickets, then mark prepaid, card-compatible, and cash-only items. One allocation percentage can leave too much exchanged cash or omit an essential cash expense.
This is a preparation method, not a ranking or recommendation of particular card products. Check the conditions of payment methods actually available to you.
What to find in the card’s terms
- Supported currency and what happens with insufficient balance.
- Conversion, top-up, and overseas payment charges and when they apply.
- ATM withdrawal fees, limits, and additional local operator charges.
- Overseas-use settings, PIN, and loss-reporting or locking options.
Instead of recording only “free,” write which charge is waived under which conditions. Distinguish stored-balance products from cards billed after payment. Obtain current terms from the issuer’s official information.
Read the currency-choice screen
A merchant or ATM may offer conversion into your home currency. Visa’s DCC guidance explains checking the local and home-currency amounts, conversion rate, and additional costs. Source link checked on 4 November 2026.
Choosing local currency does not remove every issuer charge. Read the currency code before confirming, then compare it with the receipt. Ask for clarification if the displayed conversion or total is unclear.
Calculate cash and an accessible backup
Start the cash budget with confirmed cash-only expenses. Keep items with unknown payment options separate until checked. Choose reserve cash or a second method with accessibility and loss recovery in mind.
Cash to prepare = confirmed cash-only spending + chosen reserve
Other payment budget = total unpaid budget − items assigned to cashThis guide does not invent a reserve amount. Consider whether cash or a withdrawal route is accessible if the primary card fails.
Checks before departure and after returning
- Before departure: confirm payment tasks, card terms, and cash collection.
- Before payment: read the code, conversion offer, and total.
- After a transaction: keep the receipt and compare the card app’s record.
- After returning: check leftover cash, cancellations, and deposit releases.
Use the same-amount quote comparison for cash purchases and the leftover-currency guide for remaining notes.
