Match the amount before leaving the counter
Group notes by denomination, count them, and compare the currency and total with the receipt. Two 50-unit notes and three 20-unit notes total 160 units. This is a counting example, not a recommended denomination mix.
Checking the total, inspecting condition, and determining authenticity are separate tasks. One photo or one tactile feature is not treated as a conclusive test here.
Ask about condition and handling policies
Look for obvious tears, large stains, tape, writing, or damaged corners. Asking about replacement before collection can avoid a later search for another counter. Confirm acceptable condition with the relevant institution and currency provider.
Legal validity and acceptance by a particular private changer are separate questions. For older designs, consult issuing-authority guidance and the actual provider’s conditions.
Open the guide for that particular note
The ECB security guide organizes euro checks around feel, viewing against light, and tilting. Select the denomination and series you hold; not every note has identical features.
The U.S. Currency Education Program FAQ distinguishes the value of older designs from acceptance policies. Ask the actual foreign-cash counter which notes it handles. Source links checked on 4 November 2026.
If a note appears suspicious
Ask the transaction staff to check it and retain the receipt and circumstances. For cash already received, follow the relevant country’s bank or issuing-authority procedure. Do not try passing it to someone else as a test.
There is no need to publish serial numbers or the other party’s personal details on a forum. Prefer an official checking route to speculation about an online photograph.
Before-and-after checklist
- Ask about denominations and handling of old or damaged notes before booking.
- Count each denomination at collection and compare the receipt.
- Raise obvious damage before leaving the counter.
- Consult the official guide for the specific series and denomination.
- Use the responsible authority’s procedure if authenticity remains in doubt.
These are basic personal checks, not a professional appraisal or a service that authenticates an individual banknote.
