Write a currency code for each destination
Familiar symbols such as $ or 元 do not identify one interchangeable currency. Check and record TWD for New Taiwan dollars, HKD for Hong Kong dollars, and CNY for Chinese yuan on quotes and receipts. Do not add amounts in different currencies directly.
This guide provides a record-keeping method for a multi-stop trip. It is not a survey of current local prices or payment-service registration requirements.
Separate one budget sheet into currency groups
Mark flights and accommodation already paid. List remaining cash expenses by destination and calculate each currency requirement separately. A figure of 1,000 represents different amounts in different currencies, so keep the quote time and unit with each conversion.
Destination | Code | Unpaid items | Cash needed | Quote time
Taiwan | TWD | Check | Calculate | Record
Hong Kong | HKD | Check | Calculate | Record
China | CNY | Check | Calculate | RecordThe “check” fields are a blank worksheet, not actual prices or available quotes.
Where to check unfamiliar banknote designs
Use the Taiwan central bank’s New Taiwan dollar guide and HKMA currency guide. Hong Kong has notes from different issuers; an unfamiliar design alone does not identify the wrong currency. Match the denomination and issuer information to official guidance. Links checked on 4 November 2026.
A visually familiar note and a note accepted by your chosen counter are separate matters. Ask the counter about denominations and notes it will handle.
Before moving to the next destination
- Count remaining cash by currency and denomination.
- Do not assume the next destination uses the same currency.
- For another conversion, obtain a new final receipt amount and charges.
- For cards or mobile payments, check official support, verification requirements, and limits for your own payment method.
Avoid assuming every traveller can use the same app or identity-verification route. Check that any non-cash payment method will actually work for you before departure.
Use consistent assumptions for a won total
When adding currency budgets in won, account for transaction direction, quotation quantity, and charges for each currency. Keep a planning amount based on an older online rate separate from a counter’s final quote.
